Specialty chemicals player Vantage has purchased Desert Whale Jojoba, serving to expand its existing portfolio of personal care products marketed under the Lipo brand.

Desert Whale is a producer and processor of jojoba and jojoba-based derivatives, which includes a range of oils and specialty ingredients that are used in a wide range of mainly natural-based cosmetics products.

The acquisition strengthens the Vantage’s offerings in the natural, Ecocert and organic categories for hair and skin care products, as well as color cosmetics.

Currently Vantage's range of personal care products are marketed under the Lipo name, following its acquisition of the New Jersey-based Lipo business in 2010.

Acquisition includes farming properties

Although the exact terms and conditions of the acquisition were not revealed, Vantage did say that the purchase price includes Desert Whales farming properties, where the jojoba is grown and harvested before processing.

“Vantage and Desert Whale Jojoba share a joint vision to provide the market with functional, natural products with proven efficacy,” said Chris Humberstone, executive vice president, personal care.

“Adding Desert Whale to our personal care group exemplifies our commitment to providing a broad product portfolio and new technology with applications expertise to offer real benefits to our customers formulating with innovative, green and natural ingredients.”

Targeting a wide range of natural-based products

Desert Whale was established in 1978, in Tuscon, Arizona, one of the primary growing areas for jojoba, which is a shrub best suited to warmer arid, desert-like environments, where the acorn-shaped fruit  grows year-round.

The oil that is extracted from the fruit is a popular emollient for cleansers, sunscreens, shampoos, conditioners and a wide range of other skin care products, and many of the company’s products are organic and natural certified.

Desert Whale’s range of jojoba extracts are marketed across this range of cosmetic categories for their gloss enhancing, moisturizing, conditioning, exfoliating and deep cleansing properties.
