Sonoco to expand its blow-molding plastics business
US packaging firm Sonoco has outlined plans to focus on building its blow-molding plastics business in the coming year as part of its strategic and financial update.

Within Sonoco’s consumer goods packaging sector, the blow-molding plastics business continues to drive sales of personal care products, for beauty and healthcare, Roger Schrum, vice president, investor relations and corporate affairs Sonoco told USA.

In 2012 we will start-up a new 150,000 square foot plant in Columbus, Ohio, and will install several blow-molding and injection molding lines​”, Schrum added.

These will produce packaging and components for personal care for Mast Global, the sourcing and logistics division of Limited Brands​.”

The bottles produced will be used for fragrance and skin care products for Limited Brand’s Bath and Body Work stores as well as other brands including Victoria’s Secret and Pink, he added.

Recent acquisitions add to business growth

Sonoco expects the recent acquisition of Tegrant to add significantly to its consumer goods business estimated sales in 2012, estimating that sales should hit $5bn in comparison to the forecast total of $4.5bn for 2011.

As part of the acquisition of Tegrant, Sonoco gained Alloyd Brands, which serves many consumer companies in the beauty and health markets.

Alloyd Brands is expected to generate sales of approximately $120m in 2012 and Sonoco is planning to build this brand in the European, South American and Southeast Asian markets.

Sonoco is planning to focus on building its four global businesses, including consumer goods packaging, packaging services, industrial converted products and newly created protective packaging.
