New seaweed extract improves skin appearance says BASF

BASF Beauty Care has launched a seaweed-based ingredient that promises to provide consumer benefits and a high value solution to formulators struggling in a difficult environment.

Osmogeline can help improve the appearance of the skin surface by fighting against redness, evening out tone and lending a smoother softer look, according to the chemicals giant.

Extracted from red algae found in waters around Canada, Chile and Mexico, the company said each batch is harvested by hand and specially selected for optimum efficiency.

According to the company, a consumer test was performed to assess the performance of the active in vivo, looking at skin smoothness, softness and moisurization.

The test was an original design, according to the company, that involved both participants and their partners, with the former applying the product and the latter reporting on the effects.

“We wanted to see whether the results were noticeable by a third party. In addition, a third party opinion is often stricter than that of the participant,” spokesperson for BASF Olivier Teillac told CosmeticsDesign.com USA.

According to the company, more than 90 percent of the partners stated they saw significant and visible improvements in the appearance of the skin surface within 3 days.

Good value in troubled times

With the ingredient, BASF hopes to attract formulators who are growing increasingly cost conscious.

“With the downturn of the economy, our customers are more cost conscientious but still want to produce cosmetics that have strong efficacy,” said general manager of beauty care solutions Frank Freiler.

This latest release from the company fits its aim to provide products that combine ‘consumer-proven efficacies with high value-in-use’, he explained.
