NZ skincare brand goes carbon neutral to allay ‘food mile’ concerns
The company is a major exporter and being able to prove it has offset its greenhouse gas emissions is increasingly important, according to managing director Mark Henderson.
Important for exporters
“People are looking to source as much as they can of all sorts of products locally, in order to avoid big carbon footprints. As exporters in the South Pacific, it is essential we can show we have taken the necessary steps to allay those concerns,” said Henderson.
Snowberry’s carbon neutral certification has been administered by Landcare Research’s carboNZero, which the company claims is an ISO accredited greenhouse gas verifier.
The company entered into the project in 2006 that aims to calculate a company’s greenhouse gas emissions, reduce them as much as possible and then offset the remaining unavoidable emissions.
Snowberry’s carbon credits are sourced from a New Zealand wind farm – one of the eligible projects under the New Zealand Government’s Projects to Reduce Emissions (PRE) scheme.
Last month Snowberry received accreditation for the whole of its products range; something that it claims is a first in New Zealand and perhaps even globally.
Director of Landcare Resaerch Ann Smith said: “The CarboNZero programme employs extremely robust tools to measure the greenhouse gas emissions of a company and/or its products. Right from the outset Snowberry has taken every conceivable measure to ensure they were eligible for inclusion.”
