DuPont has launched two new renewably sourced packaging materials
at the Interpack packaging trade show in Dusseldorf.

The launches include a thermoplastic starch and injection mouldable resin and add to DuPont's already extensive portfolio of renewably sourced materials. Thermoplastic starch The first of the new ingredients, Biomax TPS, is a thermoplastic starch consisting of 85-90 percent renewably sourced content. It is designed for use in thermoformed trays and articles as well being available in resin for use in injection-moulded parts and containers. The second ingredient, Biomax PTT, contains up to 35 per cent renewably sourced content and is designed for use in injection-moulded containers and cosmetics packaging. New ingredients reduce dependence on petroleum "Expanding our portfolio of solutions in renewably sourced packaging is a key strategy for DuPont's performance materials segment," said group vice president of performance materials Diane Gulyas. The company has been focusing on renewably sourced packaging for some time and the company's product portfolio provides comparable or better performance than the petrochemical-based materials they replace, said Gulyas. Furthermore, the renewably sourced materials reduce dependence on petroleum, a particularly pressing concern as prices for petrochemicals rise, according to the company. Greener packaging is also becoming a focus point in the industry as manufacturers are reacting to the consumer demand for environmentally friendly cosmetics. Cosmetics packaging firm Cosmolab/CSI has recently announced a partnership with Cereplast to develop environmentally friendly double-walled jars and closures for bio-plastics. The partnership with Cereplast concerns corn-based petrochemical alternatives, however the California-based company already has a range of post consumer regrind (PCR) products.
