The personal care division of Degussa, a global ingredients
supplier, today announced a marketing agreement with a producer of
bioactive peptides, illustrating the growing importance of this new
class of ingredients.

Goldschmidt Personal Care, a global manufacturer of raw materials, additives and active ingredients for the cosmetics industry and subsidiary of Degussa, will become the exclusive marketing partner for selected products from Helix BioMedix. The Washington based biopharmaceutical company specializes in developing and commercializing small proteins known as bioactive peptides. The company has a library of over 100,000 unique peptides with a broad range of uses, including wound healing agents, anti-aging agents for skin care products, and anti-bacterial agents for oral care products. The partnership will allow Goldschmidt to become the exclusive marketing partner for a range of the company's anti-aging peptides, and other selected ingredients for skin care formulations. Willy Klipp, senior vice president and general manager of Goldschmidt, stated that "it will allow us to complement our existing product portfolio of specialty and active ingredients for the cosmetic industry". Klipp further added that the company is currently evaluating several of Helix BioMedix' peptides, and that initial products resulting from the partnership should be commercially available from 2008. "Bioactive peptides are emerging as some of today's most promising answers to the constant demand for innovation in bio-science" explained Dr Mike Farwick, the head of research and development active ingredients at Goldschmidt Personal Care. The peptides themselves are made up of natural amino acids, and can stimulate a wide range of bioactivities, characteristics that Helix BioMedix feel explain their success as an emerging class of active ingredients. The American company has developed a number of peptides that stimulate aspects of the skin's innate ability to regenerate, which they claim reduce fine lines around the eye area without the irritation often associated with certain retinoid based products. Furthermore, the anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties of some of the peptides make them perfect as an ingredient in acne formulations and Helix BioMedix have developed a peptide that is present in a natural anti-acne system, formulated and marketed by Nature's Gate. Stephen Beatty, president and chief executive office of Helix BioMedix asserted that the "partnering with a company of Degussa's stature will assist us as we continue to commercialize our innovative peptides".
