Addressing the key issue of fragrance oxidation, specialty
chemicals group Arkema has launched Oxynitrox S100, an oxidation
catalyst aimed specifically at formulation developers.

The company says that the new ingredient allows perfume developers to modify the structures of the aldehyde family of compounds in a controlled manner. In turn, it is claimed this can help regulate the oxidation process in fragrances, while also offering environmental benefits as this process is known to have less of an ecological impact. Control of the oxidization process in fragrances is extremely important to developers because it helps to regulate and ensure the quality of the scent itself, as well as ensuring that the colour of the liquid does not alter and become darkened or cloudy. This is achieved because the ingredient has been developed to offer multiple functionality, including the selective oxidation of primary alcohols in aldehydes. Arkema says that its new ingredient contains no metallic element, but still proves effective as a catalyst in the presence of metals such as silver, ruthenium, molybdenum and cerium. The ingredient possesses the chemical structure of a nitroxide type of polymer, which the company says helps impart greater recycling properties. On top of that it is also easy to separate it from other reactive ingredients and is equally effective for use in successive oxidations as it maintains its efficacy. The company says that it conducted a successive series of tests based on a variety of different alcohols typically used in fragrance formulation, including octanols, 1-phenyl ethanol and benzylique. The ingredient has evidently proved to be equally effective when combined with this wide selection of alcohols, suggesting that it will be suitable for a wide variety of fragrances. Oxynitrox will be unveiled by the company at the current In-Cosmetics show, being held in Paris this week, where the company will also be participating in an innovation seminar to highlight its development and launch.
