Ceiling-mounted vison packager saves floor space

The demand for faster line speeds, lower labor costs and greater flexibility in handling multiple packaging formats has pushed the cosmetics industry toward greater automation. As part of that demand plants are deploying more robotic systems, mainly for the packaging, but with floor space at a premium, space-saving alternatives are preferable. Adept Technology claims its Cobra s800 Inverted is the only selective compliant articulated robot arm (scara) system designed for high speed packaging with integrated vision and conveyer tracking. Scara robotic arms work on multiple axes so they operate more freely in confined areas, then retract when not in use, claims the company. The robot features servo-controls and amplifiers embedded into the base of the robot, and is controlled by a computer, the SmartController CX, which can control up to 24 axes of motion, the manufacturer claims. The IP65 option is suitable for plants where frequent cleaning and washdowns of automated equipment are required. With the increased regulatory emphasis on hygiene in manufacturing plants, equipment makers are increasingly offering model options to withstand frequent cleanings and harsh chemicals. Designed to be fixed to the ceiling about conveyer belts, the robot has a 800mm reach, a 210mm vertical stroke and can handle a maximum payload of 12 pounds (5.5kg), claims the manufacturer. The robot uses reduced cabling, which limits the space required inside the control cabinet, claims the company. The Cobra s800 Inverted comes with access to Adept software, controls and round the clock service and support.
