Rising incidence of diabetes could give way to new skin care lines

The explosion in the number of people suffering from diabetes and
related symptoms is leading to a surge in demand for products that
treat dry skin conditions related to the disease - a niche that
personal care players could be doing more to tap into.

Currently the National Institute of Diabetes, Digestive and Kidney Disease (NIDDK) estimates that 41 million people in the US – one in seven of the population - have impaired glucose tolerance, a pre-diabetic condition that often leads to dry, itchy skin. Likewise, the NIDDK estimates that some one in 800 Americans suffers from type one diabetes, while approximately 16 million suffer from type two diabetes, both of which are associated with similar, and often more severe dry skin symptoms. But dry skin conditions, especially where diabetes-related symptoms are concerned, can also be a precursor to more serious skin complaints, leading to rashes as well as swollen, cracked skin that can lead to blisters and sores that are hard to treat and often become infected. The fact that so many individuals in the US are at risk of developing this type of skin conditions suggests that there could be a clear opportunity for personal care companies to market over-the-counter skin care ranges that target this particular niche. As well as the NIDDK's recommendations that individuals suffering from this condition should drink plenty of water and observe a healthy, balanced diet, a gentle and moisturizing skin care routine is also recommended to help soothe the associated dry skin conditions. The basic recommendation by dermatologists is that individuals suffering from such skin complaints wash in warm water using a very mild soap, complimented by skin care products with ingredients that do not exacerbate dry skin. Likewise a good shielding lotion is the best means of both maintaining the skin's moisture levels, as well as helping to protect dry skin leading to open wounds and possible infection. Although the market is not currently awash with dry skin projects that target diabetics, there are several lines on the market that have already broken into this niche. One of those is Elta Diabetic Dry Skin, a premium skin care product that is said to moisturize skin, as well as providing a water-tight barrier to providing protection for up to twelve hours that helps substitute the skin's natural oils.
