The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has awarded Gevo U.S. Patent No. 8,283,505, which protects its Integrated Fermentation Technology.
"This patented technology includes a proprietary separation unit that is designed to elegantly enable cost-efficient separation of isobutanol from other components of the fermentation broth," said Brett Lund, Executive Vice President and General Counsel of Gevo.
Isobutanol, or 2-methyl-1-propanol, is an organic compound and is used in a number of cosmetic applications such as nail polish, nail polish remover, hair spray, hair dye, and false eyelash adhesive and remover.
The technology covered by the 505 Patent provides Gevo and its partners with a significant competitive advantage, as it protects the most cost-efficient separation technology available, and Gevo claims that competitors will struggle to produce isobutanol to compete.
