Medical Marijuana, a US biotech company, has teamed up with its portfolio company, Phytosphere for its 2013 harvest as it plans to further develop over-the-counter hemp product applications for cosmetics in the coming year.

The company claims its’ self-contained hemp cultivation and oil processing facilities will produce superior raw ingredients, and after a successful harvesting season, will for the first time, put the company in a position to develop broadly applicable raw ingredients for the industry.

The raw CBD ingredients in our hemp oil can be formulated with or added to existing and newly developed products in foods, dietary supplements and cosmetics and we are working with formulators to integrate the oil with a variety of generally accepted ingredients to develop over the counter products.”

According to the company, the CBD market is presently in its infancy with exciting possibilities ahead. "The 'marijuana community' has recently embraced CBD as the next great thing in patient health and wellness—it is only a matter of time before the general populace discovers similar benefits."

Regulation

Tight regulations in the US have withheld hemp cultivation, with legislation lagging behind other countries in terms of differentiating between hemp production for recreational and industrial use. It is the only industrialised country where it is illegal to grow hemp freely.

Despite this restriction, the US is one of the biggest producers of cosmetic products manufactured with hemp seed, alongside the UK and Germany.

However, the biotech company reckons as legislations continue to change at the state and national levels—not to mention internationally— it looks forward to "vastly increasing our offerings."
