Brazilian cosmetics labeler Prakolar acquired
This weekend, Japan’s SATO, a global auto-ID supplier with solutions for supply chain management, tracking, labels, RFID and more, announced its purchase of the São Paulo–based company.

Prakolar Rótulos Autoadesivos got its start in 1967 in Santo Amaro, a sort-of suburb in the southern area of São Paulo. And in 2009 upgraded its capabilities with the purchases of an FB 3300 S flexographic printer, which was at the time the only 7-color HP Indigo WS6000 digital printer in Brazil, according to the Prakolar site.

Cosmetics labeling capabilities

Prakolar serves several industries, from food and beverages to chemical and lubricants. Cosmetics accounts comprise a fair bit of the companys’ business. “For cosmetics we have special textured printing in relief with application of varnishes, processes that add beauty and creativity to packaging,” explains the Prakolar site.

That’s in addition to:

  • labels for placement on plastic packages, glass…boxes, and tubes, among other things, on automatic labeling rolls and high-speed applicators
  • tamper proof seals
  • holograms
  • metal reactive paints
  • safety cut
  • UV varnish
  • extended labels

Global industry assets

SATO already has a sales presence in the Americas, Asia Pacific, and Europe. And, the latest purchase is meant not only to reinforce that but also to gain a strong position in the up-and-coming Brazil market.

“This acquisition not only strengthens our primary label business presence in Latin America, but also our labels capability across the entire SATO Group,” says Kaz Matsuyama, president and CEO of SATO Holdings in a statement to the press.

“This acquisition is perfectly aligned with our mid-term goal of strengthening base business and developing emerging markets to expand our global presence,” Kaz adds.

Moving ahead shrewdly

Alexandre Chatziefstratiou, who has served as Pralolar’s CEO for over 20 years, will stay on in that role under SATO’s ownership.

The regional prospects of both companies are set to benefit from the deal. “Through the acquisition of Prakolar, SATO seeks to accelerate the market penetration of its South America Group companies SATO Auto-ID Do Brasil Ltda. in Brazil and Achernar S.A. in Argentina, which is engaged in primary labels, to strengthen primary labels business and network,” notes SATO in its acquisition announcement to the press.
