A roundup of the latest methods in preserving cosmetics packaging

Flexible plastic packaging is gradually taking the place of traditional glassware in cosmetics. However; in some aspects the performance isn't as flexible. Here’s a look at some of the best ways to preserve cosmetics packaging.

Labthink international, a firm that specialises in solutions for packaging testing, has put together a paper that looks at how to obtain a high quality of cosmetic packaging, and the factors that influence the preservation of products.

Firstly, it reveals that the factors that influence preservation include; antiseptic, antioxidant treatment and the preservation of fragrance which the firm advises should see air permeation testing, package internal air volume and entity testing as main priorities.

The following are some of the best methods in obtaining preservation within those priorities:

1.Barrier property

The vapor permeation rate test is mainly used in cosmetic package films, bottles, bags and other containers.

According to Labthink, by testing this rate, production technique indexes can be controlled and adjusted to satisfy the requirement of different products.

Using a weighing method and sensor can also test the vapor permeation rate of films and packages.

2. Sealing performance

Sealing performance refers to the test of whether there is a leakage point on packages or not. This can refer to leaking in or out of the package, appearing by small cracks on materials, holes or the joining place between two pieces of materials.

Hot sealing and the bottle mouth are two of the most likely places to have leakage, therefore strict production technique and tests are necessary, where typically there are two methods: positive and negative pressure.

The positive pressure method occupies wide attention because it is not only able to test the sealing performance of ordinary packages, but also able to test additional samples by using add-ons.

3. Head space air analysis

This can be used to test the oxygen and carbon dioxide volume and proportion in airtight packages, bottles and cans.

Its ability to test the air composition quickly and accurately in production lines, storage and labs, guarantees the production and product safety.

Generally speaking, according to the preservation requirements of cosmetics, performance tests include the content preservation and the product appearance tests.
