US pre-press, printing and packaging company Precision Color Graphics has opened Specialty Packaging Technologies, a flexible packaging manufacturing subsidiary that will serve various markets including beauty and personal care.
The new entity will focus on customized premade pouches, including spouted pouches, and will be headed up by Tony Cherot as president and Jane Dirr as vice president of business development.
Dirr highlighted demand for premade pouches in beauty and personal care, telling CosmeticsDesign.com USA that “pouches can serve as a promotional secondary package that is lightweight, recloseable, and offers a billboard for product branding. In addition, the spouted pouch is an ideal replacement for a rigid bottle, offering a varied selection of closures.”
“In our experience, we have packaged everything from mascara tubes (replacing a folding carton as the secondary package) to 1 liter shampoo/conditioner refills in pouches as a primary package,” Dirr said.
“We have seen kits of travel size products moving more and more into pouches as well as promotional pouches for consumer mailings – both of which provide increased branding exposure,” she added.
Advantages of flexible pouches
Pouches offer a variety of advantages according to Precision Color Graphics, including in terms of brand recognition, shelf appeal, consumer convenience and eco-friendly options.
Unlike folding cartons, said Dirr, flexible pouches with a recloseable zipper used as secondary packaging are more likely to be kept by the shopper and used for other purposes, meaning the brand’s identity is kept in front of the consumer.
Dirr underlined the array of custom features available for the pouches. These include high-end print capabilities, zippers and other recloseable features, and new film structures that provide the pouch with a premium look and feel.
Continuation of business model
Precision Color Graphics sees setting up Specialty Packaging Technologies and vertically integrating into pouch and bag manufacturing as a natural progression of its business model.
Indeed, Dirr highlighted that the move will enable the company to offer a complete package to its existing customer base and grow its business in new, more diverse markets.
In terms of geographic scope, Specialty Packaging Technologies will initially focus on the markets of North, Central and South America, she said, although opportunities worldwide are anticipated in the near future.
