DuPont launches new anti-counterfeiting packaging film

Tackling the issue of counterfeit cosmetic and fragrance products is the aim of a new film that has been developed by Dupont using 3D imaging technology.

The film enables brand owners to incorporate the technology directly onto product packaging or labelling, making it both an integrated and a highly effective solution.

Luxury fragrances, skin care and colour cosmetic lines are often the target for product counterfeiters who have developed the means to reproduce products that look convincing but invariably have low grade formulations that pose a threat to brand owner’s reputations.

Beating the counterfeiters at the counterfeiting game

And in recent years, the counterfeiters have also developed sophisticated imitations to many of the most sophisticated anti-counterfeiting solutions, which is where DuPont believes its new technology can be used to significant benefit.

“Embossed holographic films are typically used to apply anti-counterfeiting features on packaging. However, embossed holographic films are widespread and it is easy for counterfeiters to copy,” said Peter Waker, global marketing manager, anti-counterfeiting products, DuPont Advanced Printing.

“Izon 3D security film utilises a patented DuPont imaging process to create a look that is clearly differentiated and truly 3D.”

See it at the drupa trade fair

The technology will be debuted at the forthcoming drupa 2016 trade fair, which takes places in Dusseldorf, Germany from May 31 – June 10.

During the event, DuPont will be highlighting a number of advantages to the Izon 3D security film, which include high visibility from a distinct Red Security holographic icon.

The technology also features a disappearing holographic image for advanced security, while there is also an optional transparent construction for printed text, bar codes or other images, together with a deep semi-covert image that is only visible using an additional light source such as a torch.

The drupa event will feature print samples, demonstrations, tours and featured speaker presentations, all designed to emphasise the varied applications and depth of the technology.
