BB and CC creams, which were mostly confined to Asian markets until a few years ago, have become a phenomenon. Short for blemish balm and color correcting respectively, these products are now predicted to be worth over $67 million in the USA by the end of 2017.
With the market rapidly becoming more mature, companies in the BB/ CC business now need to find ways to distinguish themselves from their competitors. Vivienne Rudd, Mintel's Director of Global Insight, Beauty & Personal Care, has commented:
"As more BB and CC creams flood onto the market, brands are having to work hard to make their products stand out and give consumers a 'reason to believe'. Asian brands have already taken steps in this direction, creating stories based on roasted and fermented hydrating, protective and anti-ageing ingredients and incorporating ambitious claims such as anti-radiation properties for computer users."
"Age has become another flag, with BB and CC creams created for young or mature skin. In South Korea, the spiritual home of BB creams, texture is another playground, with water droplet technology coming to the fore."
"All in all, BB and CC creams are managing the tricky balancing act of being multifunctional and increasingly segmented. Clever beauty brands."
