Telomere-based anti-aging product launched

US-based Telometrics Corporation has launched Vital 25, a nutricosmetic beverage that the firm claims has anti-aging properties.

The new drink contains telomerase, which is the enzyme that replaces the DNA sequence repeats at the end of chromosomes, the telomeres, that are gradually lost over time with each cellular division.

Telometrics claims that Vital 25 protects the chromosomes by lengthening the telomeres, thereby facilitating healthy division of cells throughout the body. Two extraction techniques are utilized to harvest telomerase from 'glandular tissues.'

The US company declined to comment on the exact nature of either the extraction techniques used or how the telomerase contained in the product imparts its anti-aging effects.

Telometrics stressed on its website, “It is most important to note that Vital-25™ simply places Telomere Lengthening Enzymes and peptides back into the body. This dietary supplement itself will not treat, mitigate, or cure any age-related disease.”

Science of telomeres

Telomeres, located at the ends of chromosomes, are key genetic elements involved in the regulation of the cellular aging process, that shorten with repeated replications, and therefore with age, positioning it in many theories of aging.

Telomere Biology has become a relevant topic in anti-aging research. In a study released on November 28th 2010, in the online journal Nature, a team of researchers at Harvard Medical School reported on the first reversal of the aging process in a mammal.

By reactivating telomerase, they rejuvenated worn out organs in mice that were the equivalent biological age to 80 year old humans.
