US-based nutraceutical ingredients player Bergstrom Nutrition has published the results of a study which indicates its ingredient OptiMSM has self-preservative properties for personal care.

Most importantly, the company claims that this preservative  property may eliminate the need to add any type of preservative if the ingredient is used as a 10 percent dosage in a personal care product formulation.

OptiMSM is a methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) that has traditionally been used to help support joint health and function, but the company is hoping that the new study will help to expand the products target range into the personal care arena.

Anti-bacterial properties

MSM is the isoxidised form of dimethyl-sulfoxide and it is currently marketed in joint health supplements in the US. Bergstrom’s ingredient was given FDA GRAS status in 2008.

“The anti-bacterial studies we conducted on numerous matrices clearly suggest that MSM should be viewed in a new light by the dermatology industry,” said Rodney Benjamin, technical directory for Bergstrom Nutrition.

“MSM is 34 percent sulfur by weight, which has long been a valued ingredient in dermatology and may contribute to the cross linking of proteoglycans, a key component of connective tissue.”

Hair, skin and nail care

On the basis of its study, the company says it believes the ingredient can be used to formulate moisturizers, nail polishes, acne creams and gels, anti-aging products, toothpaste and mouthwashes.

The company says that in addition to the preservative properties, the ingredient also may be used in skin care products to reduce scarring and to soften the skin, strengthen nails and to thicken the hair.r

Bergstrom Nutrition will be platforming the personal applications for the ingredient at the forthcoming Supplyside Market Place, to be held in New York at the beginning of May. The company’s boot number is 248.
