Rockefeller University debuts beauty science curriculum

In collaboration with The National Beauty Science Institute, New York City’s Rockefeller University, which specializes in biomedical research, is now enrolling students for its new consumer-facing educational program.

The new initiative was announced last week during a cocktail reception hosted by the Institute’s board at Rockefeller University.

Direct to consumer

The new courses will cover topics under the umbrella of the “science and sustainability of beauty” and will be a way for brands to speak directly to consumers in an academic setting.

Explaining the thinking behind the new curriculum Judith Price, president of The National Beauty Science Institute, notes that “consumers, and in particular, a new generation of millennials, want to better understand not just a promise of beauty but the substance supporting it.”

“Doctors and scientists have for years collaborated closely with their brand colleagues to drive innovation in the health and beauty industry. We will give those leaders of research and development a voice,” she said in her remarks at the event.

Work in progress

A curriculum advisory board is currently putting together the first master class. The eight beauty industry leaders, doctors, and scientists on that board are: cardiologist Holly Andersen; Bruno Bavouzet, executive vice president of R&D at LVMH perfumes and cosmetics; Sumit Bhasin, senior vice president of R&D at Coty Luxury; Achim Daub, global president of scent and care at Symrise AG; biologist Elaine Fuchs; Josh Ghaim, chief technology officer with Johnson & Johnson Consumer Companies; Kurt Schilling, senior vice president of basic science research and advanced technologies at Estée Lauder Companies; and Michele Verschoore, medical director for L’Oreal.
