Diamond Packaging has earned Forest Stewardship Council Chain-of-Custody (FSC) certification from the Rainforest Alliance’s SmartWood program.

Dennis Bacchetta, director of marketing at Diamond said that this reflects “thecompany’s continued commitment to environmental sustainability”, as well as a growing trend in cosmetics for green packaging.

FSC Certificate

Chain-of-custody certification guarantees that wood originates from certified, responsibly managed forests. The production of the packaging is tracked throughout the supply chain, from the forest to the consumer.

To ensure certification, forestry operations must meet a set of environmental, social and economic criteria covering compliance with laws and international treaties, land use and indigenous people’s rights, community relations, biodiversity and maintenance of high conversion value forests.

According to the FSC, about 40% of all commercially traded timber globally is used to produce paper. In the past few years, many packaging manufacturers made advances in using more environmentally friendly packaging options.

Extension of ‘greenbox initiative’

Last month, Diamond Packaging announced that it had used wind power, weight loss and recycling to create a greener package for Highland Lilac perfume, as part of their ‘greenbox initiative’.

This refers to the company’s commitment to research and design packaging solutions that are innovative and sustainable.

Diamond’s FSC accreditation now reflects a more comprehensive coverage of the main objectives outlined in this initiative.

Diamond packaging has provided packaging for cosmetics companies such as Avon, Coty and L’Oreal in the past.

“We are very pleased to award FSC certification to Diamond Packaging”, said Dave Bubserm US region manager at SmartWood. “Diamond’s commitment to integrate core principles of social and environmental sustainability into their packaging operations provides Diamond with a powerful opportunity to differentiate themselves and their customers whilst at the same time making positive impact on the environment”.
