The B-to-B event for the color cosmetics industry, held its 6th annual show (which included a packaging design competition) this month in New York City’s Chelsea neighborhood, an area where art galleries and creativity abound.

Just over 100 exhibitors were on hand, showcasing the latest color cosmetics formulations and packaging innovations this year for the event.

And, New York City’s own Fashion Institute of Technology was there too, showing a video put together by Virginia Bonofoglio and FIT students. The film was created to “reveal the consumers habits of morning make-up application” and more broadly “to inspire the industry,” as a post-event press release explains.

The Innovation Tree feature got a lot of attention as did the conference programming. And industry organizations like CIBS and CEW had stands at MakeUp in NewYork to keep members informed about available resources and upcoming events as well as to connect with prospective new members.

IT products on display

Twenty four products were featured winners on the gold Innovation Tree at this year’s event. Eleven of the winners were product formulations, 5 were full service offerings, 5 were packaging or dispensing innovations, and 3 were brushes. These were chosen from over 60 products submitted by some 30 companies for possible inclusion on the Innovation Tree.

In the full service category, Lock Your Lips, a color-intense lip lacquer formula from Mascara Plus caught the attention of Cosmetics Design as did, the solid fragrance stick from Alkos Group, called skin fragrance on-the-go-invisible.

Among the winning formulations, a food-grade lip gloss from Step Cosmetici was rather unique and a baked dark shimmer eye shadow from Cosmetic Group USA’s baked special effects collection got a good response.

Sustainable packaging options are always noteworthy and the cosmetic compact designs, made from bamboo, that Cosmei showed on the IT stood out accordingly.

In the brushes or accessories category, Pennellifaro’s Murano Makeup Brushes bring fashion and visual art to the brush design, with glass, and woven elements comprising the handles of these distinctive beauty tools.

Packaging design and engineering

Winners of the MakeUp in NewYork packaging design competition were announced at the event during a cocktail reception the evening of Wednesday 7 September. JoAnn Greco, president of CIBS, was there to give out the checks.

The winning team comprised Jessica Hedge, Erin Lew, and Aaron Hernandez from the Industrial Design school at the University of Houston. A team from the French university ESEPAC, made up of Manon Blanc, Amelie Morin, and Corentine Trotel took second place. Third went to Brian Loja, from the packaging engineering program at Rutgers University. And honorable mention went to another team from ESEPAC: Tanguy Audergon, Fanny Chambon, and Alexy Mostier.
