According to Symrise, as consumer’s interest in natural and sustainable products continuously increases, more emphasis has been put on green chemistry and biotechnology to which the global cosmetic player has catered to with an active that treats hair loss from microalgae.

In this video, Cosmetics Design caught up with Veronique Maurin, global product director cosmetic ingredients at Symrise, to find out what this new ingredient offers in the area of hair loss, that so many others on the market at the moment aren't.

According to Maurin, thinning hair and hair loss are a widespread global issue that can affect both sexes at any age and despite there being many formulations launched onto the market in this area in recent years, the problem is still not well addressed today.

Here; she describes how in a course of an extensive screening extracts on micro-dissected human hair follicles, experts at the company identified the marine water microalgae 'Isochyris galbana var T.ISO' as a highly potent anti-hair loss active.

"Ex vivo studies using human scalp skin showed a successful proof of concept with 12 percent and 42 percent hair shaft elongation at 4 and 40 ppm, respectively. A clinical test to prove the hair loss prevention in vivo is ongoing."
