The global distributor just announced its purchase of outstanding stock in Arrow Chemical, which  will mean a stronger cosmetics and nutraceutical business for Univar.

Tuesday, Unviar publicized its acquisition of all outstanding stock in Arrow Chemical. And while the showpiece of the purchase may be the active pharmaceutical ingredients Arrow imports from Asia and Western Europe, it also comprises cosmetics ingredients from the US and those regions.

Business dealings

Both companies regard the deal as a good prospect. “We see strong growth opportunities for Univar in the pharmaceutical and nutraceutical market, and continue to focus our commercial capabilities for delivering a total solution set of products and services to customers,” says Univar president and chief executive officer Erik Fyrwald, in a statement to media.

As an importer and distributor “Arrow Chemical…has built a solid global network of quality and reputable ingredient producers,” he continues.  “This acquisition enhances the value we can deliver to our customers by expanding our existing offering with a complementary portfolio of [active pharmaceutical ingredients] and other specialty ingredients...”

From the other side of the table, Gary Trief, president of Arrow looks at it this way: After, “more than 30 years, Arrow Chemical has been a business built around delivering outstanding service and value to our customers. As we looked ahead to the future, we saw Univar as the ideal opportunity for providing the resources, talent, and unique global reach to expand and enhance what we can currently offer to our customers and suppliers.”

Service industry

Univar has been taking steps to effectively serve the personal care and cosmetics industry in more high-touch ways.

Earlier this month the distributor hosted a Personal Care Affair conference in Edison, New Jerey, for chemists. The day included presentations by top ingredient suppliers like Dow Corning and Sun Chemical that were aimed at formulators looking for new solutions and showcased not only new options but clever ways to repurpose ingredients on hand. Most presentations focused first on consumer trends and expectations and second on formulation strategy.
