Gemseal emollients for use in makeup and personal care formulations get US distribution

A deal, signed this month, between ingredient maker Total and distributor DKSH means that the hydrocarbon emollients will be available through that company to cosmetics and personal care product manufacturers in the States.

Total is a global energy company. “Not only are we oil and gas producers, refiners, distributors and petrochemical specialists, we are also the world’s second largest solar energy company,” explains the company website.  Total also makes polymers for packaging and other material uses, and it makes specialty chemicals as well.

Dry oils

The Gemseal collection of emollients is a range of four specialty alkanes. And Total Special Fluids (a division of Total) markets the ingredients for use in skin care, hair care, sun care, hygiene, and color cosmetic product formulations.

Described as “texturizing agents,” on the company site, “Gemseal inert oils give access to a comprehensive palette of viscosity to address all types of formulas” and are “classified as readily biodegradable.”

Total has developed several prototype formulations to showcase the ingredients. That product assortment includes a hair modeling wax made with macadamia wax and bees wax as well as mango and shea butters. There’s a repairing anti-frizz serum, a leave-on detangler, a shimmering after-sun balm, an eye treatment, an anti-pollution serum, and many more.

Business partners

DKSH is a market expansion services provider, and according to the newly signed agreement with Total will be distributing the Gemseal emollients in the US.  “We are very pleased that Total Specialties USA has chosen to work with DKSH as their Market Expansion Services partner for their exciting range of Gemseal products,” Kai Martin, co-head of the business unit performance materials North America, at DKSH, tells the press.

“This range perfectly complements our existing portfolio of personal care and cosmetics ingredients and we very much look forward to introducing them to our extensive customer base in the region,” adds Martin.

DKSH expects the deal will enhance the company’s position in the market and help boost profitability too. It is, of course, expected to benefit Total as well: “As an expert in this field of activity, we trust in DKSH to work with us to implement our Gemseal range in the cosmetics industry in the USA,” says Franck Eydoux, VP of specialties at Total, in a press release.
