Face masks using locally sourced dairy developed

By Pooja Kondhia , 27-Oct-2011

New York-based company Dairyface has launched an organic skin care range using locally sourced dairy that has to be refrigerated to maintain product freshness.

A line of yogurt-based face masks to be applied topically to nourish and moisturize, Dairyface contains no chemicals and no preservatives, but contains other ingredients that have obtained a food grade certification, according to the company.

The founder Oksana Panasenko told CosmeticsDesign.com USA that in order to ensure the freshness and organic properties of the range, all the dairy used is sourced locally from upstate New York.

Locally but worldwide

“Dairyface’s long term plan includes expanding the skin care line to other parts of the world using the same business model of sourcing the dairy locally”, Panasenko told CosmeticsDesign.com USA.

In line with this, the company would intend to establish agreements with local dairies for supply enabling local manufacture worldwide.

Using dairy sourced locally shortens the supply chain, and thus time taken to reach the company and thus reduces the risk of contamination and need for preservatives.

Likewise, this enables faster marketing of the products, however they have a much shorter shelf life.

Keep fresh in the fridge

The Dairyface range is marketed with an expiration date on the carton of approximately 60 days from the date of manufacture and then lasts approximately 10 days once opened, Panasenko told CosmeticsDesign.com USA.

She added that the skin care range should be treated in the same way as yogurt or milk products that can spoil and give off an unpleasant smell or be susceptible to the growth of mould and bacteria.

Currently the range is available online at a recommended retail price of $19.95 and is sold in a pack of two single serving pots.

The range includes five masks all made with a probiotic yogurt base and additional ingredients including Peppermint Crème, with peppermint; Glad Allover, with dried orange peel, orange, chamomile, jasmine and grapefruit oils; Green Tea Magic, with olive, almond, apricot and avocado oils and green tea; Lavender Lovely, with lavender, citrus, olive, jasmine and black currant oils and Mediterranean herbs; and Eye Caramba, with olive and avocado oils and parsley.
