Amyris and Gingo Bioworks collaborate on biotech cultured ingredients

Biotech players Amyris and Gingko have confirmed the terms for their collaboration aimed at bringing cultured materials and ingredients to the market, both faster and more efficiently.

The collaborative project will result in a wide range of ingredients for a broad base of industries, that will include both the cosmetics and personal care categories, together with the flavour and fragrance, and food and beverage industries.

It also creates what is believed to be the world’s largest combined R&D groups focused on engineering organisms and producing cultured ingredients at an industrial manufacturing scale.

Terms finalized, shared portfolio awaits

The announcement of the project was first made in June of this year, but now that the two companies have finalized the terms, conditions and business structure of the project, the aim is to move ahead quickly to the commercialization stage.

Now that the collaboration has the green light, the two companies will share in getting a portfolio of new ingredients to market, targeting all three key industries.

The ingredients will be produced using the expertise that both companies have in crossing fermentation processes with engineered microrganisms and leveraging the biotechnology stack that they have co-developed to process full-scale manufacturing.

Amyris looks to revenue expansion

"Working together with Ginkgo leverages our combined strengths to make renewable products mainstream,” said John Melo, President and CEO of Amyris in a statement confirming the go ahead for the project.

“The combination of our capabilities creates an unparalleled offer for partners who want to create competitive advantage in their supply chain.”

Melo also stated that the collaboration would likely add to the company’s revenues and bottom line, forecasting that Amyris was already on course for record third quarter revenues.
